About Theodore Roosevelt By Theodore Roosevelt

Spanning his earliest remembrances as a child to his historic charge up San Juan Hill, and his years in the White House, Theodore Roosevelt An Autobiography offers an intimate and telling portrait of one of the greatest statesmen in American history. As a militarist and politician, Theodore Roosevelt accomplished a remarkable list of achievements including forming the Rough Riders, trust-busting companies like Standard Oil, expanding the United States’ network of national parks, and negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War, for which he was awarded the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.Theodore Roosevelt's autobiography was completed in 1913, 6 years before his death. It chronicles the life of one of America's greatest presidents.

Theodore Roosevelt An Autobiography By Theodore Roosevelt Illustrated Theodore Roosevelt 9781542300612 Books

Without a doubt, Theodore Roosevelt is one of my all-time favorite US Presidents. Not only for the policies he enacted, but for the large life he led—frontiersman, commissioner of police, governor, Vice President, President, explorer, Nobel Peace Prize laureate. This man did it all, and wrote about it in a very straightforward style in “Theodore Roosevelt: An Autobiography.”

In telling his life’s story, Theodore Roosevelt (TR) compiles each chapter around a “role” in his life. For instance, a chapter on his childhood, one on his time in the American frontier, one on his work as police commissioner in New York City, and so forth. Not only does he tell what he did, but he explains why he did it and the lessons he learned along the way.

Other people played important roles in his life, and TR was quick to recognize competent and loyal people, make them his friends for life, and then put them in positions where they could do the most good for the most people. I have a hunch that this was started by the way his father raised him. Very early in the book TR writes about his father—

“My father, Theodore Roosevelt, was the best man I ever knew. He combined strength and courage with gentleness, tenderness, and great unselfishness. He would not tolerate in us children selfishness or cruelty, idleness, cowardice, or untruthfulness. As we grew older he made us understand that the same standard of clean living was demanded for the boys as for the girls; that what was wrong in a woman could not be right in a man. … I never knew anyone who got greater joy out of living than did my father, or anyone who more whole-heartedly performed every duty.”

TR truly lived an oversized life and left an indelible stamp on the American landscape that can still be seen and felt today. This is truly an enjoyable book to read!

Theodore Roosevelt An Autobiography By Theodore Roosevelt Illustrated Theodore Roosevelt 9781542300612 Books Reviews

I wish I had been alive to witness President Roosevelt lead our nation. He was a president I could stand behind. This book was a bit wordy but interesting for the most part. I would have liked it better if it had been written more chronologically.
It's not exactly a rare book, but it is old. I'm TR-obsessed, so I really wanted an original copy of his autobiography published by Scribner & Sons. I have no intention of using this copy for reading, it is only for having it. I have read it before from the library. A true original like this one, is in too delicate a condition to read without ruining the condition of it.
Really insightful of the political challenges of his era. I only wish today's congress would read, too, as it touts the benefits of having some political moderates in place who place country before re-election. Still, like today, there were many who served for self rather than country.
The poor rating has nothing to do with the autobiography itself or the autobiography's illustrious subject. TR's autobiography is a thick tome. I couldn't tell you how many pages, though, since this edition lacks pagination. Page numbering would seem to be one of the most basic features of any book, and this volume completely lacks it (so, of course, there is no index of any kind). This supposedly "annotated" volume contains some appendixes with additional information, but certainly no annotations in any meaningful or traditional sense.

An annotated TR autobiography could have really been an interesting and useful tool for scholars and TR fans. Unfortunately, this misbegotten version does not fill that need. The lack of pagination and the consequent lack of any index essentially renders this volume worthless for those who would like to use it as a reference work on TR's life and times. Most unfortunate...
Not only was Theodore Roosevelt a very interesting , educated and prominent man , but he was a tender-hearted , conservative, morally righteous and fearless leader. He stood up for family, women's rights, and the best interests of the people. He was a wise and shrewd man who governed our country with the up most patriotism and respect for God. We need more leaders like him.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Except for the parts I did not. Ha!

Teddy R. wrote at length in detail on many aspects of his life. Some were fascinating to me, others not.

I think this book should be read by all high school students. It helps the reader understand the political workings of the day and ask whether it has changed enough in the right direction.

I took off one star because the font needs to be updated from old typewriter to something easier to read. Times New Roman, Ariel, Tahoma. Something. Please.
Great book! So much to learn about a great president! You will be surprised to find out all he accomplished in just one term as president. He had his haters, just like every person who dreams big and accomplishes his/her dreams. How much more could he have done with just a little cooperation? He may have been from privilege, but he certainly understood and fought for the everyday man, I think, because he had to overcome so much himself. He made our country a better place to live in and raise our kids. Well worth your time to read.
